Governor Kathy Hochul has proposed what she describes as the largest expansion of the child tax credit in New York State’s history.Eligible families could receive a yearly tax credit of up to $1,000 for each child under the age of four.

Continuing a theme of proposing splashy and spendy new proposals aimed at keeping families in New York, Gov. Kathy Hochul took aim at the lack of child care centers Tuesday. Hochul wants to create a $110 million fund to support the construction of new child care facilities.

Gov. Kathy Hochul has now released two early proposals from her State of the State message that aim to address concerns over the high cost of living.

Hochul's proposal would use state funds to reduce the child care cost to $15 per week for households making up to $108,000 a year.

The proposal would raise the credit to a maximum of $1,000 per child — the largest expansion in state history.

Hochul said she wants to provide families with an annual tax credit of up to $1,000 per child under age 4, and up to $500 per child from ages 4 through 16.
