At issue for one of Lansing's largest shelters is how it treats the LGBTQ+ community and whether its has run afoul of Catholic Church teachings.

Controversy continues this week over a letter sent by the board of Holy Cross Services, a child welfare organization that helps provide foster care, mental health services and shelter to dozens of communities across the state.

Holy Cross Services has appointed former Chief Executive Officer Sharon Berkobien as interim president of the organization. Steve Adamcyzk, chief infrastructure and compliance office, as the interim Chief Executive Officer.

Ryan Kunzelman, CEO of Holy Cross Services has been terminated. “I’m at peace with the situation and whatever decision was made. Every day when I come to work, my focus is on the people who we serve.

Kathleen Klaus, an attorney for Holy Cross' board, said employees had questioned whether Holy Cross is a religious institution. And the board raised concerns when staff appeared to go beyond the Catholic Church's instructions by participating in LGBTQ+ events and activities.
